Traffic Statistic No No

This may not be new to experienced bloggers, however for those who do not know, avoid making your traffic statistics public.

There are many reasons why you should make your traffic statistics private, however, the one reason which concerns me the most is bloggers reporting your site as spam because of its popularity. Over the past couple of months I have been hearing rumors of a group of users on social bookmarking sites that, when faced with competition from blogs that are gaining in popularity, will collectively report the competing site or blog as spam. I do not know how true the rumors are, however, if they are true, then it does not vote well for you to publicize your traffic statistics. Your best bet may be to keep your traffic statistics private and pray that your article is not dugg too much before it gains in popularity.

Yes, I know there is the temptation of making your traffic statistics public because you think that people are more attracted to sites that are popular and that having high reported traffic will show visitors that your site may be popular, however, the most important characteristics of a site that draws high traffic levels are, good content, usable information, new/fresh content, authority in the niche being addressed, etc.

Publishing your traffic is way down there in terms of importance. Site Meters are to be used for your personal analysis of traffic so that you can make informed decisions concerning your site/blog. You should use it to know what articles interest your visitors, the pages that visitors enter your site from(whether through searches or a social bookmarking site), whether your traffic is mostly made up of new visitors or repeat viewers, etc. Using site meters to draw repeat viewers may not be in your best interest.
